What is the Vinegar Effect - Vinegar Syndrome?

The so called vinegar effect acquired this common tag due to the smell of vinegar odour caused by the breakdown of the acetate film backing which breaks down over time due to chemical reactions, humidity and excessive heat. When the vinegar effect is well advanced the smell can be noxious and over powering. Safety issues can arise due to the irritation of eyes and mucous membrane with long exposure can be distressing without adequate ventilation or safety gear.

As the vinegar effect becomes even more advanced the film will deform and shrivel. In some early cases there is a powder or slime on the film and reels, metal reels will be corroded. The time to act is well before you can smell the vinegar syndrome.
