8MM, or Standard 8mm home movie film was one of the most popular domestic vision taking formats before Super8 was launched and there is far more 8mm around than the larger format as by the time super8 grew to a leading position video cameras had already taken the market by storm with Video 8 and Hi 8 being the popular lightweight entry level cam corder that did not weigh a ton and have to be shoulder mounted and cost considerably less than the bulky and expensive VHS and Beta cams.

8MM film was popular and cheap, it gave the home movie maker greater scope that slides and pgotograps, motion was king.

Kodak obviously owned the market with the ever popular Kodachrome, but there were plenty of players including Fuji and Agfa. Kodak had a fight on thier hands for the black and white film market with Pan X and Tri X proving to be out right
